THE WELLCOME TRUST UK
As part of Fact & Fiction Films, we won multiple International Public Engagement Grants from The Wellcome Trust UK to run public engagement projects. In collaboration with Oxford University Clincial Research Unit Vietnam (OUCRU-VN) we ran media projects throughout Vietnam that focused on health and science: Health in the Backyard, Place of Change and GameLAB.
HEALTH IN THE BACKYARD
Health in the Backyard is a public engagement project in connection with the zoonotic research being conducted at OUCRU. It explored perceived health risks of animal workers and the result was over 60 community generated films where each participant, wrote, photographed, voice-recorded and edited their own film with the assistance of the project facilitators. Topics ranged from drinking and eating fresh animal blood, prevention methods and materials, experiences with avian bird flu, antibiotic use and treatment methods for sick animals.
The films were used as points of discussion at community forums, as supporting material for researchers and as a case study at international public engagement conferences.

PLACE OF CHANGE
Place of Change (POC) is a unique health project that encouraged participants to consider key factors that affect their health and wellbeing through community generated films. The project had four workshops based around pertinent health issues in Vietnam: HIV positive intravenous drug users; professional sex workers with STIs; ethnic minorities in the malaria endemic border province of Binh Phuoc and duck farmers in the Mekong delta. These films were used by local public health government and researchers to engage discussion and public health communication strategies.
In this extension phase of the POC project we built a prototype website exploring HIV and Malaria in Vietnam. The website housed community-generated media from the first phase and new community and professional content produced during the second project phase.
